Since its introduction in 1969, Mario Bellini’s piece has captured the imagination of the world. Bellini designed the piece with a form follows function approach and an idea to send backlight into a room with a graceful and intelligent quality. To achieve this, Bellini painstakingly cut designs into cardboard, arriving at a folding one with a charming hat. This plastic film and laser-cut stainless steel piece fold together like an elegant garment into a cylindrical form. An LED light source streams up and hits the artful hat to reflect into the room a soft ambient glow. Chiara takes its name from Bellini’s daughter and the Italian expression ‘to shed light,’ underlining the design’s great charm.
